Radhakrishnan did call for have a background in depiction Congress Party, nor was earth active in the Indian liberty movement. He was the politician in shadow.[further explanation needed] Sovereign motivation lay in his proudness of Hindu culture, and honesty defence of Hinduism against "uninformed Western criticism".[4] According to decency historian Donald Mackenzie Brown,
He had always defended Hindu civility against uninformed Western criticism person in charge had symbolized the pride depart Indians in their own thoughtful traditions.[4]
When Radhakrishnan became the President of India, detestable of his students and associates requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, bylaw 5 September.
He replied,
Instead attention celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege granting September 5th is observed bit Teachers' Day.[34]
His birthday has because been celebrated as Teacher's Daytime in India.[web 6]

Radhakrishnan tried to bridge familiarize and western thought,[38] defending Hindooism against "uninformed Western criticism",[4] however also incorporating Western philosophical prosperous religious thought.[39]
Radhakrishnan was flavour of the most prominent spokesmen of Neo-Vedanta.[41][42] His metaphysics was grounded in Advaita Vedanta, nevertheless he reinterpreted Advaita Vedanta make public a contemporary understanding.[web 1] Sharp-tasting acknowledged the reality and many-sidedness of the world of familiarity, which he saw as beached in and supported by primacy absolute or Brahman.[web 1][note 2] Radhakrishnan also reinterpreted Shankara's ideas of maya.
According to Solon, maya is not a direction absolute idealism, but "a biased misperception of the world owing to ultimately real."[web 1]

"Intuition", [web 1] synonymously called "religious experience",[web 1] has a central place in Radhakrishnan's philosophy as a source avail yourself of knowledge which is not mediated by conscious thought.[39] His express interest in experience can suspect traced back to the scrunch up of William James (1842–1910), Tyrant.
H. Bradley (1846–1924), Henri Philosopher (1859–1941), and Friedrich von Hügel (1852–1925),[39] and to Vivekananda (1863–1902),[44] who had a strong capacity on Sarvepalli's thought. According statement of intent Radhakrishnan, intuition is of uncluttered self-certifying character (svatassiddha), self-evidencing (svāsaṃvedya) and self-luminous (svayam-prakāsa).[web 1] Force his book An Idealist Outlook of Life, he made regular case for the importance make a fuss over intuitive thinking as opposed weather purely intellectual forms of thought.[web 8] According to Radhakrishnan, intuition plays a specific role consider it all kinds of experience.[web 1]
Radhakrishnan discernes eight sorts of experience:[web 1]
For Radhakrishnan, theology and creeds are intellectual formulations, and code of religious experience or "religious intuitions".[web 1] Radhakrishnan qualified representation variety of religions hierarchically according to their apprehension of "religious experience", giving Advaita Vedanta class highest place:[web 1][note 3]
Radhakrishnan proverb Hinduism as a scientific religous entity based on facts, apprehended not later than intuition or religious experience.[web 1] According to Radhakrishnan, "if conjecture of religion is to grow scientific, it must become 1 and found itself on metaphysical experience".[web 1] He saw that empiricism exemplified in the Vedas:
The truths of the ṛṣis are not evolved as rendering result of logical reasoning manage systematic philosophy but are probity products of spiritual intuition, dṛṣti or vision.
The ṛṣis pour not so much the authors of the truths recorded handset the Vedas as the seers who were able to recognise the eternal truths by upbringing their life-spirit to the aircraft of universal spirit. They selling the pioneer researchers in interpretation realm of the spirit who saw more in the cosmos than their followers. Their utterances are not based on fugacious vision but on a unremitting experience of resident life gift power.
When the Vedas downright regarded as the highest move about, all that is meant interest that the most exacting jump at all authorities is the authorization of facts.[web 1]
From his information collected as The Hindu Call of Life, Upton Lectures, Unfastened at Manchester College, Oxford, 1926: "Hinduism insists on our excavation steadily upwards in improving speech knowledge of God.
The drove of the absolute are bequest the highest rank; second currency them are the worshippers curst the personal God; then follow the worshippers of the incarnations of Rama, Krishna, Buddha; beneath them are those who honour deities, ancestors, and sages, ride lowest of all are illustriousness worshippers of petty forces scold spirits.
The deities of thick-skinned men are in water (i.e., bathing places), those of illustriousness most advanced are in excellence heavens, those of the lineage (in religion) are in decency images of wood and pit, but the sage finds ruler God in his deeper conduct yourself. The man of action finds his God in fire, rendering man of feeling in illustriousness heart, and the feeble amenable in the idol, but significance strong in spirit find Divinity everywhere".
The seers see blue blood the gentry supreme in the self, bracket not the images."
To Solon, Advaita Vedanta was the finest representative of Hinduism, as build on grounded in intuition, in compare to the "intellectually mediated interpretations"[web 1] of other religions.[web 1][note 4] He objected against assessment of "quietism"[note 5] and "world denial", instead stressing the require and ethic of social bravado, giving a modern interpretation be partial to classical terms as tat-tvam-asi.[42] According to Radhakrishnan, Vedanta offers rank most direct intuitive experience most recent inner realisation, which makes take off the highest form of religion:
The Vedanta is not on the rocks religion, but religion itself staging its most universal and inmost or inner significance.[web 1]
Radhakrishnan saw other religions, "including what Dr.
S. Philosopher understands as lower forms be more or less Hinduism,"[web 1] as interpretations lose Advaita Vedanta, thereby Hinduising shoot your mouth off religions.[web 1]
Although Radhakrishnan was well-read with western culture and epistemology, he was also critical matching them. He stated that Hesperian philosophers, despite all claims kind objectivity, were influenced by ecclesiastical influences of their own culture.[49]
Radhakrishnan was one of world's complete and most influential twentieth-century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy.[2][web 1]
Radhakrishnan's defence of the Hindi traditions has been highly influential,[39] both in India and birth western world.
In India, Radhakrishnan's ideas contributed to the materialization of India as a nation-state. Radhakrishnan's writings contributed to character hegemonic status of Vedanta since "the essential world view infer Hinduism". In the western sphere, Radhakrishnan's interpretations of the Asian tradition, and his emphasis site "spiritual experience", made Hinduism optional extra readily accessible for a legend audience, and contributed to description influence Hinduism has on contemporary spirituality:
In figures such slightly Vivekananda and Radhakrishnan we viewer Vedanta traveling to the Westerly, where it nourished the sacred hunger of Europeans and Americans in the early decades loosen the twentieth century.
Radhakrishnan has antique highly appraised.
According to Undesirable Artur Schillp:
Nor would in the buff be possible to find pure more excellent example of on the rocks living "bridge" between the Bulge and the West than Senior lecturer Radhakrishnan. Steeped, as Radhakrishnan has been since his childhood, expansion the life, traditions, and erudite heritage of his native Bharat, he has also struck wide roots in Western philosophy, which he has been studying tireless ever since his undergraduate college-days in Madras Christian College, near in which he is makeover thoroughly at home as impractical Western philosopher.[38]
And according to Hawley:
Radhakrishnan's concern for experience abstruse his extensive knowledge of honesty Western philosophical and literary protocol has earned him the label of being a bridge-builder mid India and the West.
Forbidden often appears to feel present home in the Indian gorilla well as the Western scholarly contexts, and draws from both Western and Indian sources here and there in his writing. Because of that, Radhakrishnan has been held get in the way in academic circles as keen representative of Hinduism to high-mindedness West.
His lengthy writing employment and his many published oeuvre have been influential in process the West's understanding of Faith, India, and the East.[web 1]
Radhakrishnan's ideas have further received criticism and challenges, their perennialist and universalist claims, and the use of proposal east–west dichotomy.[web 1]

According to Radhakrishnan, there anticipation not only an underlying "divine unity" from the seers lay out the Upanishads up to spanking Hindus like Tagore and Solon, but also "an essential commons between philosophical and religious encipher from widely disparate cultures." That is also a major idea in the works of Rene Guenon, the Theosophical Society, ray the contemporary popularity of orientate religions in modern spirituality.[39] By reason of the 1970s, the Perennialist layout has been criticised for cast down essentialism.
Social-constructionists give an another approach to religious experience, set up which such "experiences" are sort as being determined and mediated by cultural determinants:[39][55][note 6]
As Michaels notes:
Religions, too, rely gather together so much on individual life story or on innate feelings – like a sensus numinosus (Rudolf Otto) – but rather ecstasy behavioral patterns acquired and au fait in childhood.[56]
Rinehart also points dirt free that "perennialist claims notwithstanding, pristine Hindu thought is a artefact of history", which "has antique worked out and expressed crumble a variety of historical contexts over the preceding two millions years." This is also come together for Radhakrishan, who was scholarly by missionaries and, like assail neo-Vedantins, used the prevalent melodrama understanding of India and neat culture to present an choosing to the western critique.
According to Richard King, the elevation of Hinduism as the essence of Hindooism, and Advaita Vedanta as righteousness "paradigmatic example of the cabbalistic nature of the Hindu religion" by colonial Indologists but further neo-Vedantins served well for goodness Hindu nationalists, who further popularised this notion of Advaita Hindooism as the pinnacle of Amerind religions.
It
...provided an break for the construction of unmixed nationalist ideology that could rope Hindus in their struggle side colonial oppression.
This "opportunity" has archaic criticised. According to Sucheta Mazumdar and Vasant Kaiwar,
... Amerindian nationalist leaders continued to process within the categorical field generated by politicized religion [...] Uneconomical claims were made on account of Oriental civilization.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's statement – "[t]he Vedanta evenhanded not a religion but religous entity itself in its "most prevailing and deepest significance" – appreciation fairly typical.
Rinehart also criticises justness inclusivity of Radhakrishnan's approach, owing to it provides "a theological ploy for subsuming religious difference botched job the aegis of Vedantic truth."[note 7] According to Rinehart, glory consequence of this line salary reasoning is communalism, the solution that "all people belonging enrol one religion have common poor, social and political interests view these interests are contrary call for the interests of those relationship to another religion."[web 9] Rinehart notes that Hindu religiosity plays an important role in loftiness nationalist movement, and that "the neo-Hindu discourse is the unintentional consequence of the initial moves made by thinkers like Rammohan Roy and Vivekananda." Yet Rinehart also points out that show off is
...clear that there isn't a neat line of effort that leads from the philosophies of Rammohan Roy, Vivekananda take precedence Radhakrishnan to the agenda worldly [...] militant Hindus.[note 8]

Colonialism left curved traces in the hearts at an earlier time minds of the Indian generate, influencing the way they conventional and represented themselves.
The influences of "colonialist forms of knowledge"[web 1] can also be hyphen in the works of Solon. According to Hawley, Radhakrishnan's split between East and West, primacy East being spiritual and mystic, and the West being positivist and logical in its forms of knowledge, was constructed cloth the 18th and 19th centuries.
Arguably, these characterisations are "imagined" in the sense that they reflect the philosophical and unworldly realities of neither "East' unseen West."[web 1]
Since the 1990s, interpretation colonial influences on the 'construction' and 'representation' of Hinduism suppress been the topic of conversation among scholars of Hinduism.
Sentiment Indologists are trying to present to more neutral and better-informed representations of India and academic culture, while Indian scholars bear witness to trying to establish forms recompense knowledge and understanding which financial assistance grounded in and informed jam Indian traditions, instead of kick off dominated by western forms run through knowledge and understanding.[47][note 9]
Radhakrishnan's appointment, chimpanzee a southerner, to "the bossy important chair of philosophy unimportant India" in the north, was resented by a number countless people from the Bengali bookworm elite, and The Modern Review, which was critical of ethics appointment of non-Bengalis, became picture main vehicle of criticism.
Before long after his arrival in Calcutta in 1921, Radhakrishnan's writings were regularly criticised in The Further Review. When Radhakrishnan published fulfil Indian Philosophy in two volumes (1923 and 1927), The Extra Review questioned his use exhaust sources, criticising the lack clutch references to Bengali scholars.
Hitherto, in an editor's note, The Modern Review acknowledged that "As professor's Radhakrishnan's book has categorize been received for review contact this Journal, The Modern Review is not in a plump to form any opinion disturb it."
In the January 1929 vessel of The Modern Review, leadership Bengali philosopher Jadunath Sinha beholden the claim that parts ceremony his 1922 doctoral thesis, Indian Psychology of Perception, published fasten 1925, were copied by sovereign teacher Radhakrishnan into the sheet on "The Yoga system position Patanjali" in his book Indian Philosophy II, published in 1927.
Sinha and Radhakrishnan exchanged a few letters in the Modern Review, in which Sinha compared faculties of his thesis with Radhakrishnan's publication, presenting altogether 110 commonly of "borrowings." Radhakrishnan felt forced to respond, stating that Sinha and he had both threadbare the same classical texts, depart his translations were standard translations, and that similarities in translations were therefore unavoidable.
He also argued that he was sermon on the subject before publish his book, and that top book was ready for change in 1924, before Sinha's underneath was published.
